Monica Adams

Hey there. Hi! My name is Monica (she/her). I identify as a queer, disabled, cis white woman. These aspects of my identity shape both my personal life and my work as a counselor. I believe that the experiences of those of us who exist outside of dominant norms—whether due to disability, queerness, race, or other factors—give us valuable insights into resilience, empathy, and understanding. My lived experience as someone who navigates the world with a disability has deepened my commitment to working with individuals from marginalized communities, particularly those who are LGBTQ+, BIPOC, disabled, or navigating complex relationship dynamics.

In my counseling practice, I draw from several therapeutic approaches to support healing and growth. These include:

  • Relational-Cultural Therapy (RCT): Focuses on the power of connection and mutuality in the healing process.
  • Systems Theory: Explores how our family, culture, and society shape our identities and experiences.
  • Anti-Oppression and Feminist Frameworks: Examine the impact of power, privilege, and societal expectations on mental health.
  • Narrative Therapy: Helps you explore and rewrite the stories you tell about yourself, empowering you to create new, healing narratives.

By integrating approaches like Relational-Cultural Therapy, Systems Theory, Anti-Oppression and Feminist Frameworks, and Narrative Therapy, I aim to build a safe, supportive space where we can explore how relationships, systems, and personal stories influence your mental health. My work is grounded in a client-centered focus, recognizing that each person has unique needs and perspectives. Counseling is a collaborative process, and together, we’ll tailor the techniques that best align with your experiences, values, and goals. Ultimately, I’m here to empower you to find your own path to healing, creating a space where you feel heard, supported, and ready to make meaningful change.

I specialize in working with individuals navigating a variety of life challenges, particularly those within the queer community. I also have a deep passion for supporting queer parents and families as they navigate the unique joys and challenges of parenthood. Whether you’re an individual seeking to explore your identity, manage stress or anxiety, or you’re a parent navigating the intersection of family life and your queer identity, I’m here to offer a compassionate, client-centered space for healing and growth.

From a systemic perspective, we’ll explore how your relationships, family dynamics, and cultural contexts shape your mental health and well-being. I’m here to support you in navigating complex relational dynamics and empowering you to build healthier, more fulfilling connections with yourself and others. If this approach sounds like a good fit for you, I’d love to connect and see how we can work together.
