Habit vs. Addiction ― What’s the difference?
Habit is done by choice, and the individual has full control over continuing or stopping. Unlike with addiction, the physical/psychological element is not the primary issue.
Addiction may refer to a chemical dependence (e.g. drug addiction) or behavioral addiction (e.g. gambling addiction). In either case, individuals suffering from addiction experience loss of control, withdrawal symptoms, and physical/psychological dependence to the point where it interferes with their daily life.
Whether behavioral or substance related, addiction often leads to feelings of guilt, shame, despair, rejection, anxiety, hopelessness, and/or humiliation.
Recovery Process
Our service is best suited for those who have already gone through an addiction program, and are in active recovery. In our sessions together, we can help you explore and move beyond the trauma that resulted from, or occurred due to, an addiction ― whether yours or someone else’s.
We also see couples in which one or both partners are in recovery. With my help, you and your partner can develop coping skills, break out of unhealthy roles (e.g. enabler, victim), build positive support behavior, establish boundaries, and recover from all the hurt that addiction has caused you.
