Rainbow Families is an ongoing counseling group supporting queer and trans parents and caregivers. Our mission is to foster connection, community, and resilience through a blend of peer support and psychoeducation. We hold a welcoming, affirming space to share experiences and resources as we navigate the joys and challenges of LGBTQIA+ family life together.

Throughout the course of our counseling group, we will explore the complexities of our shared identities. We will learn about strategies to navigate school systems, childcare, family life, bullying, and discrimination. We will develop a network of shared understanding and compassionate support.

We also invite you to give us feedback, share topics that you’re interested in exploring, and bring your own life experiences into the space. Together, we will build more resiliency and community to navigate queer parenthood!

Example Session Topics:

  • Navigating school systems as an LGBTQIA+ family

Group Facilitators:

Monica Adams: I’m Monica (she/her), a queer, disabled student intern counselor and parent who is deeply committed to creating supportive spaces for LGBTQIA+ families. I bring both professional experience working with LGBTQIA+ communities and lived insight as a queer parent. My counseling approach is relational and narrative, grounded in the belief that growth happens through connection, shared stories, and community. I aim to co-create spaces where caregivers feel affirmed and empowered, where we can connect, share experiences, and build community as we navigate the layered realities of queer and trans parenthood.

Annaliese Elliot: My name is Annaliese (she/her), and I am a student intern working towards my degree in Marriage, Couples, and Family Therapy. I approach therapy through a relational lens, which means I pay close attention to how our relationships, communities, cultures, and experiences of privilege or oppression shape who we are. None of us exists in a vacuum—we are deeply impacted by the people and systems around us. While I am not a queer parent myself, my work has been grounded in extensive training and experience with both children and queer communities. I hold deep respect for the lived realities of queer caregivers and enter this space with humility, compassion, and a commitment to centering your voices. I believe group work can be a transformative space in which connection, reflection, and shared experience foster healing.
